I live in the Midwest (U.S.), and lately I've really gotten into birdwatching. I live in the woods, 30 minutes from the nearest town, with a marsh leading to the river in my backyard. I've seen plenty of interesting birds.
By call and sighting, I've identified Great Horned Owls, Eastern Screech Owls, and Barred Owls. Earlier today, around dusk, I heard another owl call. After pouring over my birding books, I determined the call was reminiscent of a Boreal Owl. The trouble is, Boreal Owls aren't found in my area, and every sources I look say they live mostly in Canada.
Obviously, there's a good chance I'm wrong in identifying the owl. It just makes me wonder. How reliable is identifying an owl by its call? Also, any tips on seeing more owls would be wonderful!

I'm trying to plan a trip to Maui in Sept or Oct and am trying to decide on lodging. My fiance and I are getting married in Po'olenalena and spending about a week or so in Maui.
I have found a lot of affordable condo rentals in Kihei and Lahaina so I'm leaning towards those areas but Wailea seems to have beautiful beaches as well. Of these 3 areas, which would you pick? Or should I split my trip between South and West Maui? What are the advantages/disadvantages to these areas and what is the major difference, if any, between South and West Maui?
We want a nice relaxing, romantic trip as well as being able to like nightlife and outdoorsy stuff like snorkeling and birdwatching.

In general Rutland offer a fairly wide range of activities for various types of people, such as farms, birdwatching, rock climbing, cycling, sailing, boating, canoeing, horse riding, swimming and alot more. Although this is very good for such a tiny county, the amount of activities after school and during the school holidays could be more, and the activities could be aimed more at young people and teenagers.
When I researchered activities avaliable for kids aged between 8 and 14 I discovered that there weren't that many although I did find some; "Rainforest Roadshow" during school holidays based in the library which is free but would only appeal to certain types of people. "Teen Quad Biking" which although is popular, it's cost decrease the number of people able to join which is a very big issue. Activities for teenagers should be targeted at them and revolved around them and the cost should be a part of that.
After school clubs and youth groups are seeming quite popular, one in particular being Jules Youth Club, for teenagers between 13 and 19 for two days a week from 6:30pm-9:00pm and the membership is free. They offer a wide range of activities for every types of people and this would benifit the community better than just a one activity club, their activities include;pool, computers, music, arts, crafts, sports, and project work and much more. Jules bring the community together and I think that Rutland would benifit if we had more clubs like this. One thing I think that could be improved is having longer opening times, wider age range, extra help with schoolwork, advice and being open on weekends. It would be useful because it would allow young people to receive involved in a safe enviroment where they feel confident and most importantly like themselves.

I need it explained in simple, easy-to-understand language.
Perhaps explain the differences as to roof prism, porro prism, wide angle, degree of angle, what the X's stand for, as I don't know how to look for a tiny waterproof pair which brings things way up close to use on a boat or for birdwatching.
Perhaps a certain brand and type can be suggested? I believe Bushnell are suppose to be very good but are they pricey because of the name? I look a lot of Nikons and wonder if they may be the best buy? (I am leary of Olympus because they have so many remanufactured products out there).
Any and every suggestions and info will be much appreciated. Thank you.
Also, please explain the field of view, angle of view and if some can be attached onto a tripod without an adapter.
And, should I look for fogfree lenses only?
Would ATB (allterrain) ones be best because they are more durable?

-Participated in the workshop "Theory and Practice in banding birds and mist netting", organized by the CENAA (National Banding Centre)
-Took course on birdwatching conducted at the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo (I'm from Argentina, that's why it's in Spanish)
Should both go below "Experience"? Or below "Education"? Or below another section?
Thanks!

I couldve swore these were disney movies but I'm not positive looking through the lists of disney movies. One is of a girl who wore a pink skirt, and later died and got the help of some teenage boy, visiting him in highschool and only he could look her. I'm pretty sure this is in the same film, but theres a scene where a girl is spying and claims to be "birdwatching" when a cop comes up to her. I think this is the boys sister.
The other film i don't remember well, but it was either a kid made a robot or it was an alien that walked around destroying stuff. Im pretty sure it was an alien, sent to Earth as their world was destroyed. But if I remember correctly there was a big robot thing that shot stuff. I look a car scene and a sign, the robot or whatever had vision to detect targets... I don't know.
I don't think it was animated. I'm sure it wasn't Iron Giant though. Thanks for the first find though XD.

Okay, it was just a little idea. I figured out how to make hummingbird feeders from soy sauce bottles. They work great, cost next to nothing, blah blah. I put some pictures up on MySpace, and posted my idea in a birdwatching forum.

Here's my problem... I've been taking seniors and others with less than perfect visual abilites out birdwatching. I'll say "there's a blue bird on the tree straight ahead, about 20' up..." half will say "I can't look it" the other half will say "oh, yes..." when not even half can look it. Give them binoculars, it is a lost cause...
Here's my idea, use a camborder such as this: http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/store/Cameras-Camcorders/Camcorders/Standard-Definition-Camcorders/model.SDR-S50K_11002_7000000000000005702 which can zoom in really close. Then put it on a 19 or 22" TV running off a UPS battery backup sitting on a table. When I look something, they look it on the screen. A 25' or even 50' cable gives me the flexibility to move around. The problem is will I lose quality. Keep in mind it doesn't have to be broadcast quality, these people don't care. It gets them outside. It gives them an extremely easy way to look what I look with my younger and trained eyes.
Thanks.

Later this Summer, I am going to give up using the internet for anything but schoolwork and occasionally looking up restuarants and shops.
I want to spend more time outside, with family, learning new things. A few events that have happened recently have made me wish I spent more time with certain people. And I really wish I could change that.
The past year has gone so quick, and I don't feel like I acheived that much. I realised that I spend hours a week, not even on MSN, which I don't possess, doing pointless things on the internet. And have realised that I was perfectly glad in my childhood, when I barely knew how to log on. And so were my parents, and their parents and theirs too,..
So I am going to spend time out on bike rides, seeing friends face to face, swimming, riding.. It's light in the evenings, it's warmer every day, and there are so many beautiful things to look at this time of year. Heck, I am half way towards thirty!!!
I won't be a child for much longer, so I am going to spend every Summer being childish. I don't want a modern childhood to remember.
My question is, what do you remember doing when you were younger to keep yourself occupied. I never use mobile phones anyway.
I need some new ideas of how to fill my time, I want a more enriched life. Learning to cook better, birdwatching, whatever. New hobbies, past-times, time-fillers..
I think I would be happier if I didn't spend every this time inside.
What did you do when you were longer, before the cyber boom?
xx
*When you were younger?
by the way, I am a teenager living in English countryside, but I can receive the bus to the city/into town
Nicholas, the horse idea couldn't be moer appropriate.
My grandparents possess a horse that was supposed to be for my mom and I, but she hurt her hand. And I lost my confidence.
I could relearn those riding skills I once had with my aunt and mom.
Thank you for the superb idea!
Sailing sounds like a beautiful idea. I do not live by the sea, but I would adore to do it on holiday. For a credit crunch alternative, we are probably having a simple seaside trip this year.
When my mum was younger, she lived on a farm, and they used a boat on the river. Perhaps that would be fun!
Oh I am so pleased with every these ideas. Thank you every!!
